April 2009

According to the latest AIF research, Economic Impact of the Timeshare Industry on the U.S.Economy, 2008 edition, it is estimated that the timeshare industry supported approximately $430 million of resort property taxes, an increase of 27.5 percent from 2002.  In addition, timeshare entities reported property taxes on facilities used by sales operations and corporate offices, supporting an estimated $30 million in additional timeshare industry property taxes.

Occupancy tax payments were also reported by respondents to the timeshare entity survey, indicating an average annual level of occupancy taxes of $62,300 per 100 resort units.  These taxes are typically paid by travelers renting timeshare units, rather than timeshare owners.  Based on this average, and the estimated number of resort units, it is estimated that occupancy taxes paid by the timeshare industry and its owners and guests, totaled approximately $110 million in 2007.
