Timeshare Datashare: Average Timeshare Owner/Guest Vacation Spending Remains Stable

Provided by: ARDA International Foundation
February 2009

Average spending per traveling party of owners or guests while on timeshare vacations has remained approximately stable in recent years, according to the Economic Impact of the Timeshare Industry on the U.S. Economy: 2008 Edition, recently released by the ARDA International Foundation. The proportion of spending that occurs onsite at timeshare resorts increased, with an annualized rate of 12% from 2002 to 2007— potentially the result of the increased prevalence of larger resort campus with wider offerings of on-site amenities.  At the same time, increased expenditures on off-site transportation, primarily due to increased airfare expenditures, offset an apparent decrease in shopping off-site.

To estimate the typical amount spent per trip by timeshare owners and their guests (referred to collectively as the traveling party or visitor party), AIF sponsored an on-line survey of timeshare owners.  Respondents were asked to answer several questions pertaining to their most recent timeshare vacation in the United States, indicating the state they had traveled to, the number of people in their traveling party, the number of nights they vacationed, and the amounts they had spent in various expenditure categories.
