Republican Mitch Daniels was elected to a second term as Indiana Governor in 2008. The office will be open in 2012 due to term limits. Republicans also gained full control of the General Assembly in 2010 and hold a 59 - 40 majority. Republicans retained control of the Senate by a margin of 37 – 13.

The Senate is led by President Pro Tem David Long with Sen. Connie Lawson as Majority Floor Leader and Sen. Vi Simpson as Minority Leader. The House is led by Speaker Brian Bosma with Rep. Bill Friend as Majority Leader and Rep. B. Patrick Bauer as Minority Leader. The Indiana General Assembly convenes January 4, 2012.
