Republican Sam Brownback was elected Governor of Kansas in 2010 following 16 years as a U.S. Senator from the state. His victory headlined a string of Republican victories in statewide races including Attorney General Schmidt. Republicans retained a 32 – 8 majority in the State Senate and stretched their majority to 91 – 33 in the House with one vacant seat.

The Senate is led by President Stephen Morris. The House is led by Speaker Michael O’Neal. The Kansas Legislature convenes January 9, 2012.
