Republican Rick Snyder was elected Governor of Michigan in 2010. The office, previously held by a Democrat, was open due to term limits. Republicans also extended their majority in the State Senate by four to 26 -12 and, in one of the largest swings in the country, gained seats in the House to take control by a 62 – 47 margin.

The Michigan legislature convenes January 11, 2012.
