The Timeshare Industry Today

Jason Gamel

First Word

President/CEO Jason Gamel

Just a year ago today, I started as President and CEO of ARDA. Through this year, we have seen many challenges, the largest one being the crisis we face now with COVID-19, but we have also seen great progress. I am proud of the work that we are doing to serve both our ARDA membership and our timeshare owner base through ROC. We have strengthened our bonds through new groups and important meetings, we have streamlined and focused many of our programs and products in order to serve you better. Our work on the Coalition for Responsible Exit continues to be a guiding priority for us and one that continually allows us to help timeshare owners. Our legislative work, while always an important cornerstone of our association, has become a targeted focus for us, particularly during COVID-19. Our work in the Foundation providing research and support to the industry continues to support the work we do legislatively on both the state and federal levels and has taken on a much larger and more important role during this crisis.
I am proud of what we have accomplished over the past year, and look forward to our world of travel reopening.  Below you will find details of how we are doing our part to help our industry open back up again, legislatively and through AIF research. I have been honored to serve you this year and look forward to a time when the industry is back to doing what it does best- putting people on vacation.

ARDA is pleased to share the most current Health and Safety Guidelines from US Travel Association. “Working with US Travel and participating as a thought leader on this necessary task force has been an important initiative for us over the past few weeks.  Being able to deliver such current, critical and useful information to our ARDA membership is a key strategic priority for our association,” said President and CEO Jason Gamel. ”In a time when we all focus upon adjusting business practices to strengthen the return of our industry he also stated, “We will continue to partner with travel and vacation thought leaders and share resources as we move towards re-opening our resorts and welcoming back our owners.” Read more...

Federal Affairs Update

America's Recovery Fund Coalition

ARDA, along with more than 100 trade associations and business organizations spanning 30 business sectors and representing 58 million employees – 45 percent of the American workforce – recently  announced the launch of America’s Recovery Fund Coalition, which will advocate for a grant-based federal assistance program to power the resilience of American enterprise. Expansion of the Payroll Protection Program

ARDA's Federal Affairs Team along with ARDA-ROC Chairman Ken McKelvey have been actively engaged in advocating for the expansion of the Payroll Protection Program ("PPP") Loans as outlined in the CARES ACT to include HOA's and other 501(c) non-profits that are currently excluded in the definition and eligibility requirements.  We were pleased to see that HR 6800 - The Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act (HEROES Act) /Cares Act 2.0" legislation expands the eligibility of PPP loans to include all nonprofits of all sizes.  This is the first of many hurdles, but nonetheless progress and a win for the timeshare industry. State Affairs Update

We continue to monitor the issuance of emergency orders and other crisis rulemaking on the state and local level to ensure industry needs are met. Many of those original actions are expiring though as a lot of states pivot to reopening. This will give rise to new issues for the timeshare industry—when will closed resorts start to reopen?—what changes will be made to ensure the safety of guests? —what government support does the industry need to bounce back? —among others.
