The Timeshare Industry Today

First Word
President/CEO Jason Gamel
Welcome to this month's edition of the Inside Look! As many of you know, we recently launched our annual membership renewal drive, and our team is more engaged and connected than ever before. Your support and conversations fuel our scope of work, and we are grateful for this fantastic community; one that connects and listens to what you have to say. Positive news also hails from the Biden administration, who announced it would lift travel restrictions for vaccinated travelers coming to the U.S. from Mexico and Canada in early November. This new development, along with enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming holiday season, will help to propel the surge of vacation and leisure travel - which means positive things for timeshare owners and the industry alike. On the regulatory front, we celebrated the third major piece of timeshare legislation passed this year with the help of ARDA (and its member companies) and ARDA-ROC. The North Carolina Timeshare Act was signed into law last week, joining the State of Arkansas and the USVI, who passed major changes to their timeshare laws in 2021. Finally, I am looking forward to welcoming many of you on November 3rd to the ARDA Fall Conference in Washington, D.C., and thanks again for reading the Inside Look!

Federal and State Legislation
The ARDA Legislative Policy Council (LPC) met recently to discuss and draft its 2022 advocacy plan. We got started early because most of the work for proactive efforts actually takes place well before sessions begin. One of those efforts will include a bill in Florida that seeks to provide clarifications and modernizations to the statute to bring it up to date relative to current business models and available technology.
We were also able to celebrate a big victory in North Carolina with the passage of a new modern timeshare act that includes landmark protections for timeshare owners using timeshare exit services. This was a joint effort with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission who reached out to ARDA in the summer of 2019 for guidance. This successful partnership underscores the importance of ARDA’s regulatory outreach work. Some recent outreach efforts have included industry overview and research presentations to the ARELLO general assembly at their annual meeting in Orlando, and at the ARELLO Regulatory Investigations Seminar in Birmingham, AL.
