Vacation Timeshare Buyers Get Younger, New Report Says
About 50% of vacation timeshare owners have incomes of at least $150,000, and the average age of new owners has dropped to 39, a new report finds.
Nearly half of vacation timeshare owners have an annual household income of at least $150,000, a new report shows.
About 28% of timeshare owners have household incomes of $250,000 or more, and about 18% have incomes ranging from $150,000-$249,000, according to the report of the American Resort Development Association, which represents U.S. timeshare owners. The report is based on responses from 2,549 timeshare owners.
Only 5% of timeshare owners have household incomes less than $75,000, according to the report, which was conducted for the association by Sports & Leisure Research Group. The group interviewed timeshare owners online Feb. 9-March 11.
Most owners either own by themselves or with another person in their household, according to the report. The average age of timeshare owners is 45, while the average age of recent timeshare purchasers is 39.
“The reason the owner demographic has shifted to younger travelers in recent years is because Gen Z and Millennials grew up experiencing timeshare with their families,” says Jason Gamel, the association’s president and CEO. “They understand firsthand how the product works and why it’s a great way to vacation. Since they’ve already experienced it and like it, they are more apt to take over their parents’ timeshares or purchase on their own.”
Some other report findings:
- More than 9 of 10 owners’ timeshares are located in the USA. Nearly half are located in the South, and one-third are located in the West.
- Owners spent an average of 11 days on a timeshare vacation — one more day than in 2021.
- On average, owners have visited their most recent timeshare destination more than seven times.
- The average length of timeshare ownership is 13 years, with Baby Boomers owning their timeshare for 21 years and Gen Zers owning for nine years.
