May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.
Q: Can you share a bit about yourself and your cultural heritage within the AAPI region?
A: I am a Filipino-American working on the Data & Analytics team for MVW’s Finance and Accounting department. Of the more than 7,600 Philippine islands, my Filipino family originates from the island of Leyte in the Visayan region. Our culture is a rich mix of many cultures including Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and American. This blend of cultures has shaped our traditions, values, and way of life, creating a unique and vibrant heritage.
Q: What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you?
A: For me, it is a time of reflection and an opportunity to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of AANHPI individuals, while also acknowledging the challenges we have faced and continue to overcome. As an example, many Filipinas played a pivotal role in World War II by serving in the U.S. military as nurses. Filipinos continue to bolster the nursing workforce, making up 4% of nurses in the United States today. I swell with pride knowing my heritage stems from a place of courage and community effort.
Q: What aspects of your cultural heritage have been most influential in your professional journey?
A: The values of continuous learning, perseverance, and leading with joy have been the most influential aspects of my cultural heritage in my journey. I come from a family of farmers, fishermen, loggers, and construction workers — all jobs that my Filipino grandpa held! It takes grit to continuously learn, and my grandparents’ example has driven me to constantly seek growth and improvement. Their resilience and dedication inspire me to approach my work with the same determination and enthusiasm.
Q: Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your cultural heritage in a professional setting?
A: Currently, I’m an initiative owner in MVW’s modernization efforts, and we just had our first kickoff meeting, where I was relied on to analyze data, put together a succinct presentation to provide clarity about everyone’s role, and to facilitate brainstorming sessions for issues that arose. Before the meeting, I reminded myself to lead with kapwa, or a sense of unity and connectedness. When people feel connected to their work, I know I’ve done my job well. This sense of shared identity and mutual respect is a cornerstone of my cultural heritage.
Q: What legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of AAPI professionals?
A: I want to leave a legacy of representation and resilience for future generations of AANHPI professionals. It’s important that these young people pursue their dreams and excel in their chosen fields while staying true to their cultural roots. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, I aim to contribute to a workplace where diversity is celebrated and valued.
