February 1 – February 28 is Black History Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.

Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?

A: For me, Black History month is a time to reflect, and honor the resilience, brilliance, and contributions of Black individuals and how their impact has shaped our history, but also our present and future. It is a time to reflect on the innovation, bold leadership, courageous actions, and perseverance of those who came before us.

Q: Who are your biggest inspirations throughout Black history, and why?

A: Of course, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for his unwavering commitment to justice and equality for all. Dr. King faced violence, resistance, and through it all – he remained committed to the mission of ensuring basic civil rights for everyone. His work inspires me to remain steadfast in everything that I do, even when progress feels difficult or long-term. I also feel like progress is ongoing and generational – and while we often celebrate those who came generations before us, we are still at a point where we are observing so many firsts. I’m inspired by those who continue to break those barriers, but reminded that there is still work to do.

Q: What advice would you give to young Black professionals interested in following a similar career path?

A: The advice that has resonated with me the most would be to seek out mentors, advocates, and community. I believe everyone thrives in environments where they have support, community, and visibility. Additionally, I would remind any young professional that they belong in the space that they are in. They have something to contribute, and be a part of what shapes a diverse culture and progress towards a common goal.

Q: What key lessons from your career would you like to pass on to others?

A: Always challenge yourself when you feel like you have gotten complacent – it is the best way to continue learning, growing, and ensuring that you are providing value to the organization and your team.  I have tried to remain in a position where I am always asking questions or taking on more responsibility.  For me, I feel unfulfilled if I am not challenged and if we aren’t positioning ourselves to grow and be disruptive – and I’ve left prior organizations because of it.

Q: What excites you most about the future of this industry?

A: I am most excited about how the industry is evolving! From our innovative technology enabling us to provide an all-around modernized customer experience without friction, to our best-in-class product offerings and benefits to keep our members engaged.
