May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.

Q: Can you share a bit about yourself and your cultural heritage within the AAPI region?

A: I’m a proud Filipino American with roots in Tarlac, a small but spirited town in the Philippines, north of Manila. My identity is deeply shaped by Filipino culture, with a touch of Spanish heritage that enriches my family’s story. My father’s U.S. Navy service lifted us from poverty and opened a new life for us in my birthplace, Charleston, South Carolina.

Q: What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you?

A: Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to honor the cultures, stories, and contributions that have shaped our communities. As a proud Filipino American and general manager of Ocean Sands Resort, I’m grateful to represent my heritage in a growing and diverse industry. It inspires me to lead with purpose and help open doors for others to thrive.

Q: What aspects of your cultural heritage have been most influential in your professional journey?

A: The values of hard work and humility run deep in my heritage. My parents grew up working in sugar cane fields, walking miles each day to provide for their families. Their sacrifice keeps me grounded and reminds me never to take opportunities for granted. That foundation has shaped how I lead, serve others, and stay true to my values.

Q: Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your cultural heritage in a professional setting?

A: In 2022, I was deeply honored to be recognized alongside fellow Filipino American leaders by the National Federation of Filipino American Associations, the Filipino American Community Action Group, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Washington, D.C., and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin as one of the “Top Filipino History Makers and Shakers” in Hampton Roads.

Q: What legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of AAPI professionals?

A: I hope to encourage future AAPI professionals, especially my two sons, to believe they belong in every room, every conversation, and every leadership role. It is truly inspiring to see our CEO, Caroline Shin, an Asian American leader, continue to #MakeHistory. Her example and my journey remind me to lead with gratitude, honor my roots, and inspire others.
