February 1 – February 28 is Black History Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.
Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?
A: Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the Black experience! It’s not just about our past; it’s about honoring the resilience, achievements, and contributions that continue to shape our communities today. It means proudly remembering our heritage, perpetuating our rich culture, uplifting Black voices, and purposefully building the framework for a lasting and meaningful legacy.
Q: Who are your biggest inspirations throughout Black history, and why?
A: Keeping it modern, let’s start with Barack Obama, our 44th and first Black POTUS, who redefined and forever changed the realm of political possibilities. Ketanji Brown Jackson, who broke barriers by becoming the first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. And let’s not forget Pulitzer Prize–winning Kendrick Lamar, whose music is a cultural bridge across races and generations.
Q: What advice would you give to young Black professionals interested in following a similar career path?
A: Find a mentor to help you navigate your path! Not everyone has the same path, so own your journey, stay curious, and never stop learning. Don’t be afraid to seek guidance; it’s a strength not a weakness. Embrace challenges — they breed resilience, confidence, and adaptability. Know that your voice and your perspective are powerful. Use them to shape your path.
Q: What key lessons from your career would you like to pass on to others?
A: Leadership is in the influence, not the title. Some of the most knowledgeable and impactful leaders have no formal authority. People are not problems to solve, but humans to be understood. Empathy matters because people want to feel heard and respected. Culture is not a statement on the wall; it’s how we communicate, collaborate, and show up for one another every day.
Q: What excites you most about the future of this industry?
A: From a recruitment perspective, Vacatia’s brand-driven, tech-forward position in the guest experience economy allows us to imagine what’s next! It brings the creation of new roles, evolving career paths, and new talent opportunities that didn’t even exist just a few years ago. We’re attracting brand ambassadors and future leaders who will help shape the company’s growth, culture, and long-term vision.
