February 1 – February 28 is Black History Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.
Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?
A: Everyone wants to see successful people who they feel represent them. Black History Month spotlights the successes of African Americans and how we have added to the overall successes of the country and the world. It highlights the greatness that people can achieve when they are committed to being good at what they do.
Q: Who are your biggest inspirations throughout Black history, and why?
A: I grew up in Tulsa, OK, former home of what was called Black Wallstreet. That was destroyed decades before I was born, but I grew up knowing various teachers, lawyers, bankers, newspaper editors, and doctors. I have a cousin who was a mathematician, and one who was the first black petroleum engineer to graduate from the University of Tulsa. I’d have to say my biggest inspirations come from people I actually know; however, over the years, I’ve discovered many inspirational scientists and inventors like Dr. Charles Drew, or Katherine Johnson.
Q: What advice would you give to young Black professionals interested in following a similar career path?
A: I guess my advice would be, get your foot in the door, get to know the people in the departments that interest you, and ask a lot of questions. People like to help people that are enthusiastic about what they want.
Q: What key lessons from your career would you like to pass on to others?
A: Stay curious and keep learning. You never know where life will take you.
Q: What excites you most about the future of this industry?
A: I’ve always been fascinated with automation, and I want to see how it will change this industry.
