February 1 – February 28 is Black History Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.
Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?
A: Black History Month is a time to recognize the contributions of African Americans in the United States. It highlights notable events and achievements, often overlooked in our educational system, and brings attention to influential figures in Black culture.
For many African Americans, this recognition fosters a profound sense of pride. In a society where they have frequently been marginalized or made to feel unimportant, having our stories and achievements acknowledged serves as a powerful reminder of their significance and lasting impact. Black History Month not only celebrates these contributions but also reaffirms the value and dignity of a people whose history is an essential part of the nation’s fabric.
Q: Who are your biggest inspirations throughout Black history, and why?
A: There are many that come to mind: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Harriett Tubman, George Washington Carver, Madam C.J. Walker, Rosa Parks, Nat Turner, and Booker T. Washington.
Each of these people rose to a higher sense of purpose; they were tenacious, ambitious, committed to something greater than themselves and understood that freedom was every person’s right and were willing to sacrifice to make it a reality for the good of our people.
Q: What advice would you give to young Black professionals interested in following a similar career path?
A: One of the most important steps you can take as a young professional is to invest in your personal and professional development. Start by seeking out reading materials that will help you enhance your communication, leadership, and people skills. Building these abilities will prepare you to navigate workplace dynamics and stand out in your field.
Additionally, immerse yourself in information related to your industry. Staying informed about the latest trends and developments will give you a competitive edge and help you make informed decisions throughout your career.
Finally, find a mentor who is generous with their time and knowledge. A good mentor can provide you with valuable guidance, support, and insight as you progress on your career path.
Q: What key lessons from your career would you like to pass on to others?
A: Have confidence and humility, trust yourself, and listen to others’ perspectives. Maintain a sense of humor and avoid taking yourself too seriously.
A sense of humor can help you navigate difficult situations with grace and helps you maintain a positive outlook. Not taking yourself too seriously allows for flexibility and smoother interactions with others.
When you trust and believe in yourself, you will be more likely to take initiative and face challenges with resilience.
Staying humble, but confident allows you to recognize your strengths while remaining open to learning and improvement. Humility encourages collaboration, while confidence empowers you to pursue your goals.
Valuing others’ perspectives helps you gain new insights and fosters a collaborative environment. Also, listening creates a respectful environment and can lead to better decisions and stronger relationships.
Q: What excites you most about the future of this industry?
A: The travel industry presents a wealth of opportunities for individuals seeking to advance their careers. Within this sector, there are numerous paths available, each offering the chance to develop professionally and achieve success. Whether you are interested in hospitality, tourism management, or travel consultancy, the industry’s dynamic nature allows individuals to find a route that matches their skills and ambitions. With dedication and the willingness to explore various options, anyone can carve out a rewarding career in travel.
