May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we’re celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals in our industry. Learn more about their inspiring stories and insights by reading below.

Q: Can you share a bit about yourself and your cultural heritage within the AAPI region?

A: My parents immigrated to the U.S. from Seoul, South Korea, with the hope of providing my siblings and I the best opportunities. Growing up in Winter Park, Florida, where the Asian community was small, it was easy to feel disconnected from my heritage, however, my parents were intentional about keeping our heritage alive. We celebrated Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) with friends and family, enjoying a traditional feast that included rice cake soup. We were taught to show respect for our elders by using honorifics in our language, wore our hanbok (traditional clothing) during new year gatherings, and made homemade Kimchi with extended family, usually a two-day process. And, of course, we cooked and enjoyed many Korean dishes, my favorite being Galbi, marinated short ribs.

Q: What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you?

A: To me, AAPI Heritage Month is more than a celebration, it’s a time of reflection and deep gratitude. I’m especially thankful to my parents, who made countless sacrifices so that my siblings and I could pursue our dreams. Their resilience and hard work laid the foundation for us and paved the way for future generations. It’s also a time of pride, as I have watched my mother country grow and evolve socially, culturally, and economically over the past two decades. I’m incredibly grateful I live in a place where I can celebrate and share my cultural heritage freely, both in this great nation and within my company, where diversity and authenticity are truly valued.

Q: What aspects of your cultural heritage have been most influential in your professional journey?

A: South Korea is known for its strong family bonds and the concept of “Jeong” a deep, emotional and meaningful connection with people. Over my 25+ year career, I’ve been very blessed to work for companies with this same principle of strong family values. I’ve also been fortunate to build Jeong-filled relationships with colleagues and mentors; connections built on trust, care, and investment that have shaped and supported my professional journey.

Q: Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your cultural heritage in a professional setting?

A: As an Asian American working in Human Resources, I’m incredibly proud of the unique perspective my heritage brings to the workplace. I am especially proud that at Holiday Inn Club Vacations, our Core Values of Caring, Courage and Creativity, encourage team members to be authentic and celebrate our diverse backgrounds. It’s empowering to work in an environment where our different experiences are valued and we are encouraged to lead with authentically, which only makes us stronger.

Q: What legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of AAPI professionals?

A: Like many immigrant families, our journey began with a parents’ dream for a better life for their children. I believe my siblings and I have honored our parents’ sacrifices by achieving our own successes in our communities and careers. Growing up, the presence of Asian Americans in professional spaces was limited. Today, seeing my daughter thrive in graduate school and pursue her career with passion and confidence, I’m excited for future generations of AAPI professionals and the powerful ways they will shape their communities, companies, and our country. Future generations of AAPI professionals should feel empowered to lead with confidence, knowing they belong in every space they choose to enter.
